The Tangle Lakes region is a hub for hunting, fishing, hiking, canoeing, and camping.  It is also wildlife-rich and includes wintering habitat of the Nelchina Caribou Herd.  But it’s threatened by mining.  Pure Nickel, a Canadian company with funding from the Japanese company ITOCHU, has conducted extensive explorations for nickel, copper, and platinum.  The region’s champions have proposed creating a State Wildlife Refuge to protect the area from mining.
